  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch (23cm) round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter and dark chocolate together in the microwave using 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth. Alternatively, you can melt them together in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water.

  3. In a separate large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and cocoa powder until well combined.

  4. Add the melted chocolate mixture to the sugar and cocoa mixture. Stir until smooth and well combined.

  5. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

  8. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

  9. Once cooled, you can dust the cake with powdered sugar if desired and garnish with fresh berries.

  10. Serve the flourless chocolate cake slices with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.
